My writings, old and new...

I've been an avid reader since I was 10 and my parents subscribed me to ''Boy's Life''. We lived in a small town without TV for 3 years; my family read as many books as we could! (My wife still occasionally mentions TV shows I've never seen; I think the books I read did me more good!) I'm going to put my opinions of books I've read and especially those I could not finish.

Hi – I'm reading "Blood Ascension: Rule of The Council-Book One" by Orlando A. Sanchez and wanted to share this quote with you.

"Being both a mage, and the last Night Warden, he was a formidable threat. He could be a dangerous enemy or a potential ally. Tonight, I’d find out which."

notes on my 2005 NaNoWri Nove

Name of the book: Visiting Ronald Regan's Boyhood Home Volumn 2
          Author: Michael W. Bell
    Type of book: Military fiction

Notes on my 2005 Write A Novel In A Month (nanowri.org) “Visiting Ronald Regan’s Boyhood Home Book 2”

“Visiting Ronald Regan’s Boyhood Home Volume #1 was originally written in 1990 and 1991 and not been completed. In 2005, I wrote “Visiting Ronald Regan’s Boyhood Home Volume 1. I wrote “The Lawyer’s Story”, which is set in the same universe and time as “Visiting Ronald Regan’s Boyhood Home Volume 1”.

The problem is I used the two main characters as secondary characters in “The Lawyer’s Story” so some serious rewriting is in store for that 1990 novel...…

I took liberties with the characters in Le Femme Nikkita and MASH. This was done in the spirit of fair usage.

I took “liberties” with both the Catholic Church and the Church of England. However, my notions were based on news reports. (Who wrote “you can’t make this stuff up”?)
There are three types of Naval vessels I had to change.
  1. The major character is actually a Navy boat, Yard Patrol Craft YP-674. The problems are:
    1. ”My” YP-674 has a maximum range of 1800 miles and I raised this to 2000 miles and
    2. ”My” YP-674 has a maximum speed of 12 knots and I raised this to 15 knots.
  2. There were no suitable Fleet deep sea tugs in service. So, I invented one and made it a Quartermaster Senior Chief job. I alsls made my Feet Tug capable of refueling my modified YP (YP)-674). I also had the same problem for my Cruisers. The best cruisers were nukes and were all East Coast boats. So, I “invented” a class and gave it the capability of refueling my P-674!
Every couple of years, I write the Navy and ask questions about the original YP-674. The only reply I’ve gotten was a terse notice, on a webpage, that this command did not answer inquires from the pubic, most military commands and most of the Congress!

So, fuck them, they don't care and that annoys me a bit.

I doubt if I have to get permission from Mother Navy before I have a copy or two printed off...

addendum to 2005 novel

Three things that may not be common knowledge:
1. In the 1960s, France was part of NATO and therefore, the United States had bases in France. One of these bases was Laon Air Force Base. The location is taken from wikja.org:
" It is located in the Aisne département of France, less than one mile southeast of the village of Couvron and 6 miles northwest of Laon; on the southwest side of the Autoroute des Anglais (A26 autoroute) 1 Mile (1.6 km) east of the village of Couvron-et-Aumencourt."
We lived at 83 Rue de General LaClare in LaFere.

2.  There was a popular spy show called LaFeme Nikita. The show was about a spy/Special Forces group called "Section" or "Section One". Major characters included:
Operations who had been an Infantry Platoon Leader in 'Nam. He became head of Section. He is ambitious, forceful and may have  raped his number two, Madeline, at least once.
Madeline:, is the cold blooded Second in Command. She is Operations’ closest ally.
Birkoff or Seymour Birkoff is Section One's resident Communications and Computer person. He also supervises on going operations.

3. Mash: This was a very popular half hour TV show. I have used the persona of the Commanding Officer, Sherman T. Potter pretty much as I think he would have acted. I took liberties with the persona of Father John Patrick Francis Mulcahy and Head Nurse, Major Margaret Houleand. The religious machinations I use on these two characters were based on actual real time activities between the Catholic Church and the Church of England. To quote some one, "you can't make this stuff up".

"I don’t know if the reality of CDF life matches that. Your vision of what it means to be in the CDF — and I mean no disrespect — is romanticized"

"“Never underestimate an enemy. Even a mouse will fight when cornered by a hungry cat.”

“And you’re the mouse?” Faza asked. “So good to see you understand your place.”

“Stupid child,” I whispered. “Tonight, I’m the cat.”"

Back when I wrote this novel, I had some vague notions about where the characters came from.
