This section of my novel "The Lawyer's Story" was hard to write. I could not remember exactly when I edited this and spent several weeks casually trying find this material. I think my subconscious mind found this for me.

After he had decided to "sleep forever", Daniel Thomas wrote on a post card "You said I was very hard to wake after my surgery and I deeply regret waking. Soon I will sleep without the pain of waking."

He addressed the post card to his ex, put it on his dresser and proceeded to his "self surgery"

... 

Months later, "Mark" came to visit Daniel's ex

... 

" So you visited Daniel in his den. How did he look to you? "

"He had that stupid beard; he looks much better clean shaved."

" it is a classic 'Yankee Clipper Skipper' design. It does look nice. "

"It is the ring of fur from his ears across the top half of his throat. Why does he have that fur?"

Mark handed her Daniel's post card.

"This note could easily explain."

She read the note, looked puzzled, then horrified and Mark could tell when she rejected the obvious answer

"I don't know why."

" Speculate", Mark ordered

" Perhaps to hide a skin defect? "

"He does not have any skin defects!"

"Perhaps he does now?"

" i don't see what he could have. "

"Perhaps the text about sleeping forever is a strong hint?"

"I still don't get it. I hate riddles! "

"Perhaps he accidentally cut himself shaving?"

"How badly could be cut himself with a safety razor? "

"He was using a straight razor."

For a brief instant, Mark knew she had grasped the horrible truth and then rejected it

"Why is he living in that awful hotel?"

"His psychologist lives there. "

"Why does he need a psychologist?"

"The beard, my dear, it all comes back to beard and the reason he feels the need for it. "

"He lives there because his girl friend does!"

"On the contrary. The woman you called his girlfriend is an exclusive Lesbian. She is not sexually attracted to our Daniel. "

Mark paused

"She is highly drawn to you and told me that several days of love making with Emma would finally make an honest woman of you."

"But I am not interested in her!"

"My medical staff thinks you are. "

There was a long pause

"Suppose I give you some more information about his beard. He used the straight razor to cut a line across his right Carrefour artery. He could not bring himself to slice fatally deep. I see what you did as an attempt to kill one of my soldiers!"

Finally understanding, she blanched

"Do not anger me again, woman!"

Mark stood and let himself out. One of his body guards, a uniformed police sergeant, gave her the cold eyed stare of a shark and she knew the Angle of Death had spoken with her and one of the Dark Angel's killers had looked her over.

It was not a happy feeling.

As the sun went down, it grew dark in what was truly Daniel's house. She was afraid, suddenly uncertain of everything and mentally adrift.
