My writings, old and new...
I've been an avid reader since I was 10 and my parents subscribed me to ''Boy's Life''. We lived in a small town without TV for 3 years; my family read as many books as we could! (My wife still occasionally mentions TV shows I've never seen; I think the books I read did me more good!) I'm going to put my opinions of books I've read and especially those I could not finish.

Brawling
When
I was an active duty Marine, I learned some things about how to behave when I
was off the base, or off the ship. You might call them rules:
1. Avoid trouble and get away from it
if you can.
2. In this regard, do not wear your
uniform off the base, or off the ship, and never advertise that you are a
Marine. It’s sad, but there are folks who just want to see how tough you are.
3. If trouble seems likely, and you
must leave, before you leave, make sure there isn’t someone who needs help,
e.g., someone who is being bullied.
4. If you cannot avoid trouble, and
you must engage, act fast, and stay upright because when you go to ground, you
limit both your ability to move and your vision. But more importantly, when you
go to ground, you can be kicked and stomped!
5. To avoid personal injury, do not
use your fists, or your elbows! And do not head butt! Instead, use your
forearms, the heels of your hands, your knees, and your feet. Your hands have
many small bones that are easily broken, and, yes, your elbows and your head
are hard, but they are easily damaged. Once a hand or an elbow is damaged, that
arm may be useless. And if you damage your head, it may be game over. If you
insist on using your fists, grab some dirt and make a fist, or make a fist
around an object, like a rag, and chop, don’t punch. If you insist on head
butting, use your forehead, not the side or the back of your head, and strike
their nose, their cheek, or the side of their head. Do not not strike their
forehead, or the point of their chin. Also, I would not head butt the back of
an opponents head.
6. Look for something you can use as
a weapon (even a toothpick). And use it! Now is not the time to worry about
lawsuits, or being arrested, because the life you have is the only one you’re
going to get!
7. Remember, if you have to engage,
the only rule is to win, and that nothing you do to win is unfair, or off
limits!
8. For example, taking your
opponent’s knee caps out, crushing their wind pipe, biting their ears off,
making sure they can’t have kids, making sure they can’t see, or hear, and
making sure that they have a gimpy walk because their ankles, or their instep
have been crushed!
9. This doesn’t mean that you will be
able to do these things, or that you won’t get badly beaten, but it does mean
that you are going to try to hurt your opponent!
10. Most important, I learned that I
was part of the Brotherhood! This meant that what happened to
one of us, happened to all of us, and that once I began something, I would not
quit, ever!
11. Because Marines will not quit
something they begin, they will do everything possible to avoid trouble and not
engage! (I recall that our Gunny used to remind us that we have an excellent
chance of winning a Street Fight if we don’t engage).
